Mike Kelley is a Los-Angeles based photographer specializing in architecture and interiors photography, as well as aerial and aviation photography.
After completing degrees in Environmental Science and Studio Art at the University of Vermont and University of Otago in New Zealand, Michael moved to Lake Tahoe, CA to pursue his dreams of becoming a professional snowboarder. However, after sustaining severe injuries, Michael decided to follow his passions of art and design into a career as an architectural photographer.
Michael specializes in creating photos that communicate a sense of place, belonging, and the design intent of the architect. His creative approach helps his clients create bold and impactful marketing materials, capturing their audiences whether through print, interactive, or digital media.
Mike’s approach is based on an incredible attention to detail and a number of techniques developed as a result of his lifelong interest in design and digital art. While these techniques (and gear used to make them) are relatively simple, when they all come together, the resulting images captivate viewers far more than any image created by a single press of a shutter button. Mike firmly believes in creating beautiful images through whatever means necessary, rather than taking a snapshot of a scene, and his images speak to this philosophy loud and clear.
There is always an element of surprise in the fact that a young, 20-something former snowboarder decided to devote his time to photographing architecture. Yet, Michael loves being able to take his time with his work and considers himself a picture maker rather than a picture taker. He is personable, particular, and finds great satisfaction in the thought process and meticulous approach that architectural photography requires.
Mike has developed a simple and repeatable method that extends the decisive moment of an image and creates incredible depth, texture, and beauty as a result. In his workshops, you’ll learn everything from the fundamentals of compositing and light painting, simple tricks to make your real estate, architectural, and interiors photographs stand out from the crowd and generate more business, and learn how to create breathtaking light painted shots during both the day and at dusk.
